In commemoration of 10 years of the Russian military invasion and 2 years of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine we would like to bring your attention to the problem of Forceful deportation of Ukrainian children

In 2014, the Russian Federation has violated the UN Charter and invaded sovereign Ukraine. In 2022, Russia escalated its unjust and unprovoked invasion to the full-scale war. During these 9 years, UN Human Rights commission annually reported that Russia is violating human rights and forcibly transfers Ukrainian children onto its own territory.

In January 2023, Russian authorities announced that they deported 738 000 Ukrainian children from Ukraine to Russia. The names and whereabouts of deported Ukrainian children have  not been released to the Ukrainian government, to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) nor to any other international organisation that can ensure lawful family reunification and representation of human rights of these children.

Ukraine identified and provided the names of 19 358 deported children to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Of those children approximately 10 000 have been located and, as of May 2023, only 361 children were returned to their families,  caregivers and legal guardians in Ukraine.

The practice of Russian filtration camps for Ukrainians must be stopped immediately. Children should not be forcefully separated from their parents and caregivers.

Children have the right to be children and be with their families. South Africa can stop the abduction and forceful deportation of Ukrainian children. Please use your voice!
