For the first time in South Africaa tsymbaly player Petro Skazkiv comes all the way from Ukrainian! Tsymbaly is the Ukrainian version of the hammer dulcimer that was common instrument in Ukraine since 9th century. See Petro Skazkiv playing

Dyvyna folk singers
Folk ensemble “Dyvyna” from Donetsk region will share some folk tunes and involve everybody in social dancing!
Bandura played by Nadia Pryimak and Svitlana Neil
Bandura, also called kobza, a stringed instrument of the psaltery family considered the national musical instrument of Ukraine. It is used chiefly to accompany folk music. The modern bandura has an oval wooden body; a short, fret-less neck attached to the soundboard in an off-center position and 68 chromatically tuned treble strings stretched over the soundboard. Hopak performed by Oleksii Ischenko
A Ukrainian folk dance originating as a male dance among the Zaporizhia Cossacks in 16th century, but later danced by couples, male soloists, and mixed groups of dancers. The Hopak is often popularly referred to as the “National Dance of Ukraine”. See Oleksii dancing at SABC3 studio
Petrikivka painting by Tatiana Hurn
(or simply “Petrykivka”) is a traditional Ukrainian decorative painting style, originating from the village of Petrykivka, where it was traditionally used to decorate house walls and everyday household items. The earliest known examples of this style date from the 17th century, but it continues to thrive and develop as a modern art form. Recently Tatiana Hurn has paineted in Cape Town a super-sized mural (150m2) of Ukrainian lighthouse from Crimea in Petrykivka style.
